Update Week of December 16, 2013

Parents,

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!

As you know Holiday break begins December 18.  I hope you enjoy your time with your family and friends.  As it’s a shortened week and Tuesday, December 17th is Sports Day there will not be an update next week.

Below are the summaries of the topics we covered in English, Math, Science, Social Science and Strategy Instruction. Please also consult the Assignment Calendar tab above for specific dues dates and upcoming Middle School events.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me via email, fischers@ismanila.org.

ENGLISH

Students in Ms. Monroe’s and Ms. Hawkinson’s classes completed and turned in their Poetry Anthologies.  Students in Ms. Hawkinson’s classes worked together in groups to interpret and perform a poem for a Poetry Choral Performance.

MATH

Mr. Cargile returned the graded Fractions, Decimals and Percents Assessment students took last week.  Students completed an assessment reflection and made corrections.  Students then worked on problems from collaboration cards- two cards per table, answers on the other card.  Students then began the next unit, Ratios.  Mr. Cargile provided examples of how ratios are part of a whole (fractions), or part/part or use to compare different types of quantities and measures (rate).

SCIENCE

Mr. Patterson’s students continued to explore forces with Newton’s First Law of Motion (Law of Inertia)- an object at rest will remain at rest, an object in motion will remain in motion unless acted on by another force.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Students in Ms. Vogt’s and Mr. Wislang’s classes completed their Name the Room nomination performance tasks.  Students then had the opportunity to share with their classmates why ISM Loft-house should be named after their innovator.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me via email, fischers@ismanila.org.

See you again on Monday, January 6, 2014!!

Update Week of December 2, 2013

Parents,

Below are the summaries of the topics we covered in English, Math, Science, Social Science and Strategy Instruction. Please also consult the Assignment Calendar tab above for specific dues dates and upcoming Middle School events.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me via email, fischers@ismanila.org.

ENGLISH

Students in Ms. Hawkinson’s and Ms. Monroe’s classes spent the week analyzing a poem of their choice using the Point, Evidence, Explanation method of critical writing for their Cornerstone Assessment.  They also continued to work on their poetry anthology, which is due next week.  Please consult the Assignment Calendar for the specific dues dates.

MATH

Students in Mr. Cargile’s and Ms. Nageea’s classes continued to review decimals, percents and fractions.  Students took a pre-assessment to determine which skills they needed to specifically review.  Students corrected their own pre-assessments and reflected on the skill areas they individually needed to review and master before the actual assessment on Friday.

SCIENCE

In Mr. Patterson’s classes, students observed several demonstrations of forces.  Students will next focus on Laws of Inertia, which is Newton’s Three Laws.  Students were introduced to an object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion will always be in motion unless acted on by an outside force.

Ms. Cook’s class continued to explore the Innovation unit by defining and demonstrating speed, velocity, distance, acceleration, deceleration and constant velocity, as well as Newton’s 2nd Law, the Law of Acceleration (F= M x A).

In Mr. Pasamba’s classes students need to work on the their World without Friction poster, which is due Thursday December 10th.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Ms. Vogt’s and Mr. Wislang’s classes spent the week students continued to work on their Innovator Performance Tasks.  Ms. Vogt extended the deadlines for submission.  Please consult the Assignment Calendar for the specific dues dates.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me via email, fischers@ismanila.org.

Enjoy the weekend!
